(Inspired from the book of Luke 19:1-10)
#1 My Story
Thrice I applied as a salesman in one of the most famous brands in the Philippines, I was rejected because of my height. Take note on the height, but not lacking in the pleasing personality criteria (just kidding).
On the fourth time finally I got hired by God’s grace and strong backer but they want me to put me in the outlet that most salesman don’t want to work in due to the location and structure of the workplace.
I never had a chance to work on my dream job on that time. Lo and behold I got hired to work abroad. So ironically I rejected their offer as a salesman.
#2 Shorter Man with Taller Woman
I’m always glad when I saw a man shorter than me, why? Because it feels good I’m not the shortest man in the room.
My wife will always tell me, you will never win in the height comparison. It’s true from the woman whose taller than me (she’s 5’8 by the way). I’m thanking God each day because He answered my prayer to have a godly, tall, beautiful and smart woman. You know why she’s smart??? Because she chose me!
#3 Proud Boss
My previous Boss shared to us he is proud being small. The question is why he thinks that way? What is so proud about being a shorty? Well his explanation is like this.
He is proud because, “every time a taller man talks to him his head raised up high, while the taller guys always bowing down to him every time he speaks”. Makes sense isn’t?
So what hinders us to approach God? Is it because in our physical features, not smart enough, not wealthy enough, or are we just shy because we sinned a lot in the past or even in the present? I’m talking to myself as well on this.
The story in Luke chapter 19, we usually think maybe we are Zacchaeus, who has been labeled and judged by the people around him. Or maybe we are the Jesus-like in this story, who is not judgmental and forgivable.
But I just want to emphasize 2 characters in this parable from the passage above:
1. The Crowd: Are we like the crowd who’s blocking the way to the new believer who is seeking the Lord. Maybe we are the one who is really mocking and labeling other people. Judging them because of their past mistakes, looks or appearances, degree, achievements and titles.
Just maybe, we are the one who hinders them to seek Jesus, because of our self righteousness. Everyone has a “blind spot”. Like we offend or say something without knowing it. People get hurt with our words, instead giving encouragement when they really needed it the most.
2. The Tree: Can we be a tree? Of course not because we are human. But can we be like the “Sycamore Tree” in this parable? Who helps Zacchaeus to encounter Jesus personally. A tree that has ability to lift others, not bringing others down. Who can be reliable in times of need. Who will not let you down or at least hold you or support you for a moment.
Off course let’s give credit to Zacchaeus for being bold in his faith, he’s the one who thinks he needs to use the height of that tree so he can see Jesus even from a far. And it’s all worth it, because Jesus sees him, and he is called by his true identity he is called by his name “Zacchaeus”. First time, since a very long time.
The greatest short story of all time is the story of Jesus. He didn’t come here to save few, but he came here to save us all.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life.
Question: What do you think hinders you to approach or to know God more in your life?
